Coyuchi Steps up the Style in Eco-Friendly Home Textiles
The first company to bring organic cotton bedding to the U.S., Coyuchi isn’t just riding the eco-chic bandwagon—it’s spearheading a new paradigm for luxury in home textiles. Simple, well-designed table linens, towels and bedding made with all-natural, nontoxic materials are the brand’s MO—as is maintaining an ethical business model based on fair trade supply chains.
Founded more than 20 years ago in Point Reyes, this natural-lifestyle pioneer may derive its moniker from a type of cotton grown in the Oaxaca region of Mexico, but the brand’s design vocabulary originates in Northern California’s coastal landscape.
“We draw inspiration from nature and a sense of place—a feel of openness, the fog rolling in and out,” notes CEO Eileen Mockus, who took the helm at Coyuchi in 2013. “I think of it as a contrast between coarseness of the overall landscape and fine details that’s been built into the design. There’s also a particular quality of light and the way it shifts and plays on fabric, which happens in every home over the course of day.”
Mockus’s belief that eco-mindedness never goes out of style has stood the company in good stead. This past March, the brand moved its hub to a renovated warehouse in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood where an expanded home base—including the company’s first formal showroom—is the latest reason to hotfoot it over to the burgeoning art-and-design district.
Will new urban digs influence Coyuchi’s nature-infused aesthetic moving forward? Not likely. “Our collection has always been complementary to more modern, minimalist spaces so it actually makes perfect sense to be here,” Mockus explains. “Something about this industrial, warehouse-y area feels very creative and appealing to me, but I made sure we had space for a garden patio out front because access to natural elements is important.”
Moving house this spring also coincides with Coyuchi’s 25th anniversary. To celebrate the occasion, the brand is reintroducing some of its most iconic, time-honored collections with exciting updates. The signature Air-Weight cotton towel collection—a U.S. first in fair-trade certification for towels—comes in a new assortment of designs and colors. Also available in fresh hues perfect for the upswing into spring, customer-favorite percale sheeting and honeycomb blankets are now available in certified organic, fair-trade cotton, ensuring your conscience will feel as good as you look after a snug—and healthy—night’s sleep.
