Sneak Peek! SFC&G is proud to present the Collectors Lounge at Art Market San Francisco
SFC&G is proud to present the Collectors Lounge at Art Market San Francisco, the bay area’s leading modern and contemporary art fair. Conceived and designed by Arkitektura, the visionary modern furniture and lighting showroom, the Collectors Lounge highlights the inherent crossover between art and design by showcasing each piece as sculpture in its own right.
Arkitektura tapped local designer Philip Wood to curate the space, who says of its concept, "From a design perspective I wanted to highlight the furniture as objects, not just as seating. For designers like myself, furniture is almost a medium in it's own right. Arkitektura represents the best in the world, and I wanted to give people an opportunity to see how inspiring these pieces are.” The lounge will feature pieces from Arkitektura's showrooms by B&B Italia, Cassina, Minotti, Cappellini, Edra, and Classicon and by globally recognized designers including Jasper Morrison, Rodolfo Dordoni, Patricia Urquiola and Philippe Starck amongst others.
Wood partnered with San Francisco design studio Dual SF to fabricate the installation. "We chose simple plywood as a contrast to the sophistication of the furniture,” says Wood. "It's also a material that we as furniture makers and designers use a lot, often with little consideration, but artists like Donald Judd helped to show us how beautiful the material can be in it's own right and I see the whole lounge as a conversation in and around art and design.”
As part of our continuning coverage of Art Market San Francisco, we asked five of San Francisco's leading designers to curate the Fair and select the pieces that most resonated with them. Check out our Designers Curate Art Market 2014 series here.
