The Making of a Space by Manuella Moreira Interiors
It's always fascinating to learn more about how a space comes together. Recently, we had the chance to learn more about an interesting project designed by Manuella Moreira Interiors for her client's 16-year-old daughter. Read on to learn more about this process and how she works with her clients.
Tell us more about your recent project in New Canaan.
The New Canaan project started with designing a youth media Room for the client’s daughter and grew into a much larger scope including the foyer, master bedroom, lower level gallery hall, game room, home theater and other custom accents throughout the home. Upon entering the home, you are greeted by the custom, 12’ custom light fixture by John Pomp; which cascades down the two-story foyer. Taking center stage is a clear acrylic table complimented by the leaning mirror on the curved wall; highlighting antiquities from the client’s collection; a sculpture of Buddha and Vishnu dating back 450 years.
The master bedroom consists of neutral tones and rich textures such as mohair, velvet, cashmere and grasscloth wallpaper; transforming it into a calming and soothing space. The metallic wallpaper on the ceiling highlights the architectural details, adds warmth and creates the perfect backdrop for the sculptural light fixture.
The lower level was transformed into a space for hosting friends or simply having a family movie night. The hallway is accented by subtle horizontal stripes, emphasizing the family’s passion for movies and music with autographed posters from celebrities such as Gene Wilder, Olivia Newton-John, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Michael Jackson.
For the home theater, the client’s main request was for a cozy space with non-traditional theater seating, but with an overall theater atmosphere. We chose comfortable velvet sectionals, ottomans, rich textures and sculptural accent tables to add warmth and personality to the room. The 4K projector and 156” screen create the ultimate viewing experience along with Dolby Surround Sound hidden behind the upholstered walls.
Lastly, the game room is a great place to challenge the competitive personalities with the reclaimed wood ping pong and foosball tables. The grasscloth wallpaper adds warmth and compliments the different textures throughout including the reclaimed wood bar, stacked stone wall and floating shelves that accent the client’s collection of sports memorabilia. The youth media room in the New Canaan home is stunning.
Tell us more about how it came together.
The youth media room has been one of my favorite projects to date! Interesting fact: my client was 14-year-old, Ashley. She had a clear vision for the space and wanted the perfect white wonderland with pops of color to match her fun, edgy and sophisticated personality. The space offers a super comfortable hangout area for her and her friends to just sit back, relax and watch a movie. Maintenance and durability were a concern with an all-white space; therefore, I chose all indoor/outdoor fabrics throughout to ensure they are as durable as they are stylish.
Designing an all white space can be challenging; it’s important for each piece to stand out on its own and not blend in too much with one another, therefore, I chose very rich textures to add depth and contrast welt, to highlight the silhouette of some upholstery pieces. Pops of color were sprinkled throughout with custom pillows, accents, accessories and art to ensure it all translated into a fun, edgy and sophisticated space – just like Ashley.
How would you describe your interior design style?
I would describe my style as modern, clean and timeless; although with and edge and no fear to express my love for color. I was born and raised in Brazil. I grew up surrounded by rich culture, beautiful architecture and amazing textiles; which have inspired and challenged me to think creatively, in each and every project.
Tell us more about how you work with your clients? How do you create your vision?
When I start to work with a new client, I try to learn as much as possible about their likes/dislikes and most importantly, their lifestyle. Designing a space that is livable and functional, is a main priority for me; as much as making it beautiful and timeless.
Do you have some go-to brands that you always work with?
I’m a big fan of Kelly Wearstler, especially her lighting collection. I love the range of styles, finishes and unique pieces.
Anything else to add/share?
I absolutely love what I do and hope it translates into every space I design. I thrive on the challenges that each and every project bring. My clients inspire me every day and I am so grateful for the freedom they give me to be creative.
