A Celebration of Latin Flavors at Sonora
There are some meals that stay with you long after your leave a restaurant. Such was the case during a recent dining experience at Sonora. A staple in Port Chester, I recently had the chance to staple an array of their Latin-inspired dishes crafted by Chef Palomino and his team in celebration of their upcoming 20th anniversary and their exciting future ahead.
Featuring a beautiful fusion of flavors inspired by Chef Palomino’s childhood in Bogota, his earlier years in New York City and his training in France, the menu at Sonora creatively showcases a variety of Latin flavors from Peru, Mexico, Spain, Argentina, and the U.S that left me excited to try the next dish (check out the gallery for a full recap).
The heart of Sonora is Chef Palomino whose passion for food and community is infectious. A seasoned chef, Chef Palomino has been a staple in the community, mastering his menu and offerings while also staying true to the heart of his mission: to "make a statement with every dish."
Such is the case at Sonora where you will find a bustling bar where you can enjoy a diverse collection of drinks, such as the Cucumber Mango Martini, Pisco Sour and fun collection of Margaritas (classic, spicy, etc) as well as a full wine and beer menu. The cozy and welcoming is a great spot to enjoy lunch and dinner as well as some of their many specials, such as their four-course Portuguese Wine Dinner for $48 and an incredible Happy Hour where you can get drinks from $4-7 and appetizers like their made-to-order guacamole, for $6.
Sonora is also incredibly accommodating to the modern palate, offering a variety of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free selections, which is clearly labeled on the menu. One of my favorite dishes from the evening was the surprising Vegan Paella made with farro, pumpkin slices, roasted brussels sprouts, beets, cauliflower and topped with tofu aioli. The classic Seafood Paella was also a hit that was beautifully made with shrimp, clams, mussels, lobster, chorizo, and saffron rice with sofrito sauce. The organic salmon and the Lomo Saltado (sautéed filet mignon, chorizo, onions, peppers, fries, and brown rice topped with a fried egg) was another hit that I would happily order again. I was also impressed by their desserts where I loved the chunky-whole blueberry crumble and delicious (and rich!) chocolate cake.
