The 2014 NYC&G Innovation in Design Awards Winners: Product Design

WINNER: Live Edge Burl Table, Cliff Young, Ltd.

This sumptuous table’s natural slab of burlwood merges seamlessly with cold-rolled steel, marked by a blackened finish, to result in a piece of furniture that is both organic and industrial. Given the natural quality of the wood, no two tables are alike.

Chef Wall Garden

RUNNER-UP: Chef Wall Garden, Wheelock Maidique

Not everyone has access to a kitchen garden, especially in New York City. The Chef Wall Garden provides an urban solution for growing edible plants and herbs indoors. Grow lights and an automatic irrigation system work in concert to bring produce right to the table—no backyard garden required.

FINALIST: Sonnet, Weitzner

Something that is both present and not, Weitzner’s handmade openwork Sonnet wall covering is fashioned of mulberry and abaca pulp. It can also be hung as a window shade or positioned between panes of glass.

Xosted Lounge Chairs, Phil Caggiano Design

FINALIST: Xosted Lounge Chairs, Phil Caggiano Design

Yet more proof that you can make something of virtually anything, Xosted lounge chairs are fashioned from reclaimed stainless-steel race-car exhaust tubes, with each segment mirror-polished by hand. The decidedly modern forms come in both silver and gold.
