International Artist Designed Gallery-Home Lists for $5.25M

Ai Weiwei Designed Home

Set on 37 acres in Columbia County, this 13-year-old residence in Ancram is the only house in the U.S. conceived by Chinese contemporary artist and activist Ai Weiwei, who designed the home for an art-collecting couple in collaboration with Swiss architecture firm HHF Architects. The 3,500-square-foot three-bedroom primary structure comprises four connected modules with a corrugated-metal exterior that mimics the farm storage sheds dotting the surrounding landscape. Additionally, the property features a lap pool and a Y-shaped guesthouse with a studio and gallery space.

The current owners, also art collectors, purchased the spread in 2013. “This house attracts a certain type of buyer,” says Graham Klemm of Klemm Real Estate, the broker for the $5.25 million listing. “It was designed by an artist to accommodate artwork, and the home itself is a work of art.”
