Matthew Perry Trades $12.5M Minimalist Pad for Century Tower Penthouse
Known best for his role as Chandler Bing on Friends, actor Matthew Perry has just sold his clean-cut, modern three-bedroom for $12.5 million. It was listed last year for a span of four months, but at the time there were no takers. However, a fortuitous off-market deal recently came his way, and he was able to shed the estate for $4 million more than he originally invested in 2011.
A stunning property perched atop Hollywood Hills with a coveted panoramic cityscape view, it’s a far cry from the recliner-centric, foosball-equipped Manhattan apartment that we’re accustomed to seeing his character living in. According to Variety, he purchased his real life digs for $8.5 million in the Bird Streets neighborhood, which is home to other well-known celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jodie Foster and Keanu Reeves. Perry’s place was unique in that it was built in 1962 but later remodeled as a modern imitation of the pioneering Case Study Houses, which were built as a post-war experiment in efficiency and design.
From the front, this panoramic paradise looks a bit underwhelming, but that changes immediately upon entry through ultramarine glass panels into an atrium courtyard. The living space beyond is an open floor plan sporting lustrous hardwood floors that segue seamlessly into the outdoor door area fit for a prince with a scintillating view of the city and an infinity pool. The view is the same whether you’re inside or out because it’s a crystal clear floor-to-ceiling glass door that separates the chic interior from the resort-like backyard. You’ll find stepping stones in a small pond, and fire chalices in this backyard retreat that make entertaining a no-brainer. The home also includes a master suite that opens into the pool area. Directly below that is a state-of-the-art screening room that offers a view into the LED-lit depths of the water.
Perry is literally moving up, going from this stunning gem to a statelier and correspondingly more expensive 40th floor penthouse steeped in luxury. The price tag on his new place in the renowned Century Tower located in Century City was $20 million, where his neighbor is surely not serving coffee at Central Perk, but rather Candy Spelling, another beneficiary of syndication royalties.
