Former Hearst Homestead Goes to Auction

A historic homestead in Westchester went to auction last week with a minimum bid of $2.5 million. Owned originally by the Strauss family (founders of the department stores which would become Macy’s), and then by the Hearst family, the property’s list price stood at $6.75 million before the auction was announced. A listing for the site is still live with Paramount Realty—meaning the renovation-ready estate may still be on the market.

Scooped up by the aforementioned Strauss family in 1895 as part of a larger, 43-acre parcel of land, the now 7.3-acre property then passed hands first to publishing magnate Randolph Hearst in the 1980s, who lived there until his death in 2016, and then to the Republic of Seychelles, who began prepping the main home for renovation before abruptly putting it up for sale.

The 14,000-square-foot home that still stands on the property has been completely gutted, with excavation already completed for a lakeside infinity pool. The lake itself is the estate’s showstopper and centerpiece, fed by a natural spring and so clean you could fill your cup from it.
