Top 21 Overseas Retirement Destinations

Portugal Best Places to Retire

Live and Invest Overseas, a resource for overseas investment, real estate and retirement, recently announced the release of their newly expanded, annual Overseas Retirement Index for 2019.

The Index concentrates on cities (and a couple of regions), rather than whole countries, providing the more specific information needed to make informed decisions, including reporting on potential downsides, such as pollution, health care, and/or if the cost of living expensive.

Each report in the Overseas Retirement Index is divided into categories, such as the cost of living, health care, residency options, entertainment, recreation, English spoken, expat community, taxes, real estate affordability, real estate restrictions, infrastructure (Internet, electricity and domestic access), environmental factors, crime and safety, access to North America and climate. This year, Portugal was the hot destination, which is renowned for receiving over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year.

Additionally, the expat community is well established and welcoming, the medical facilities and health care are affordable and high quality with two major hospitals nearby. The continuing strength of the dollar helps Americans moving to Portugal. At the current rate of exchange between the euro and the U.S. dollar, a retired couple could live comfortably on the Algarve coast on as little as US $1,700 per month. One can rent a two-bedroom apartment in this region for as little as US $720 per month. Or buy an Algarve pied-à-terre for US$150,000 or even less. Portugal's property market remains undervalued where you can find ocean views available to suit all budgets, plus the well-maintained roads allow for easy access to the rest of Portugal and Europe. Read on to check out the complete list of where to retire overseas this year.
