Top Spots for Fall

Where Litchfield tastemakers go to shop, dine and take in the view

Signs of a new season are everywhere in the northwest corner. This month I decided to reach out to a group of fellow "tastemakers" and designers who live in Litchfield County and ask them about their favorite autumn haunts. Here's what they had to say:

"I love to spend my Saturdays at Privet House (Warren, 860-868-1800, and hanging out at the Rooster Tail Inn (Warren, 860-868-3100, My other favorite place is The Millstone Cafe in Kent (860-592-0500,, owned by my friends John Cummins and Carol Hawran." — Richard Lambertson, fashion designer

"I'm crazy about Charym Center Studio on West Street in Litchfield (860-567-7795, Part of the spectacular West Street Yard, a restored 19th-century lumberyard, Charym is an amazing space built with pitched wooden ceilings and heavy wood beams. It serves as the main studio for Charym yoga classes. It can be rented out for special functions as well." — Alexandra Champalimaud, interior designer (Champalimaud Design, NYC, 212-807-8869,

"I love shopping at George Champion in Woodbury (203-263-8442, He always presents beautiful examples of iconic modernism. On previous visits I found an elegant Nakashima dining table and Memphis pottery by Ettore Sottsass. I've even found more decorative pieces like a linen-wrapped buffet by Karl Springer and a 1980's klismos slipper chair by B&B Italia. George is one of the most knowledgeable dealers I know and a truly nice guy." — Bruce Glickman, co-owner and designer, Duane Modern (NYC, 212-625-8066,

"My favorite place is Lemonade Lake, named by our neighbor's dad who dammed up the brook and "built" it in the '50s. It's a tranquil, private lake near our home. It's gorgeous year-round, but I think my favorite time is seeing it reflect the beautiful fall foliage in October." — Susan Bednar Long, interior designer (S.B. Long Interiors, Greenwich, 203-769-1030,

"After a hectic week in the city I tend to want to stay near my home in Kent. I love the chipotle bacon from J. P. Gifford on Main Street in Kent (860-592-0200, It's a great Sunday treat for my guests or when I'm by myself. When I am feeling adventurous I run to the Litchfield farmers' market on Saturdays in season." — Jack Levy, interior designer (Jack Levy Design, NYC, 212-980-8900,

"For lunch or an afternoon break, I love to go to Chaiwalla Tea Room in Salisbury (860-435-9758). Mary makes the food herself; her tomato pie is out of this world, as are her rare and original blends of teas." — Eric Cohler, interior designer, (Eric Cohler Design, NYC, 212-737-8600,

As for me, the road I live on is rural, but in the heart of Washington, CT. The view is an Arcadian vista with rolling hills, open fields and ancient forests. Every weekend my children and I ride our bikes past this backdrop, confirming that when it comes to design, nature has the final say!
