Route 7 in Fairfield County is jammed with retail stores, office buildings and industrial parks. The only thing missing (until recently) was a place where homeowners and members of the design trade could go to source products and materials—and be inspired. Enter Riverbend. Described as a “think tank for design and implementation” by owner Michael Greenberg, Riverbend Design Studio is a 3,500-square-footshowroom set close to the road in Ridgefield. The one-story building is unassuming from the street, but
inside, visitors find a sophisticated mix of high-quality samples, materials and finishes.
“We wanted to create a place where people could see thoughtful design ideas, be inspired and imagine how everything can come together,” says Greenberg.
From reclaimed flooring to handcrafted cabinetry,Greenberg’s own custom millwork is featured here. (Good Earth Millworks is located up the hill behind the studio.) His hand-picked vendors include Waterworks, Studio Pompea, Masterpiece Wood Floor, Audio Design, CT Custom Clay and Paris Ceramics, purveyors of European tile.
It’s a win-win.
Says Rebecca Scott of Waterworks: “We can showcase our products. Our craftsmanship and quality story integrate well with Michael’s woodwork and it gives us a chance to be represented with other vendors.”
Specialty wall finishes by Paul Williams of CT Custom Clay are on display. “It’s a positive way to show off different applications and gives me a place to send interested clients,” says Williams. “It’s been working out very well for us and I plan to show more textures and colors in the future.”
The creation of this space is only natural for Greenberg, who started building custom homes some 40 years ago. Today, Michael Greenberg & Associates, based in Westport, includes a fully staffed firm ofarchitects and design professionals, as well as Good Earth Millworks and Riverbend. Greenberg remains as committed to quality now as he was in the beginning. “I have always been very fortunate to have clients who are confident and willing to be a little different,” he says. “They appreciate artistry and craftsmanship.”
For this builder with a background in philosophy, Riverbend is all about holistic design—something Greenberg has embraced since day one. “Every property is unique, and I’ve always believed in bringing architect and artisan together,” he says. Riverbend doesn’t sell prescriptive building materials or techniques; rather it endorses collaboration and the expansion of ideas.
Says Greenberg: “It’s not just about what people can
see here—the exact finish or a kitchen island display—
it’s about the world of possibilities.”
