Weston Designer Sam Allen

Everyone is buzzing about Sam Allen’s tabletop design for the Red & White Ball

Weston designer Sam Allen (Sam Allen Interiors) offered a fresh take on Connecticut Cottages & Gardens tabletop at this year’s Red & White Ball, an annual event that benefits the Greenwich Chapter of the American Red Cross.

What was your inspiration for this table? Blue and white Chinese tea jars that I saw at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Then, I saw a great collection of them at Lillian August, and the rest was history!

How did you choose to mix the wide-striped fabric with bright colors? Once I decided to use the blue and white jars, I realized the Ralph Lauren fabric I had used for my cabana in Albert Hadley’s "Rooms With A View" this past fall was the perfect choice to recycle as a tablecloth. Peonies have always been one of my favorite flowers, and I love the way pink looks with navy and white. I also love hot pink with orange and had just seen these gorgeous vibrant orange pansies, so I had to figure out a way to incorporate them as well.

“I had hoped to use long-stem peonies for the center arrangement, but it was too early in the season.
So I chose cherry blossom branches instead!”

The combination of silver and ceramic is beautiful. How did that idea develop? I came across the “peony vases” that are actually a smaller version of the giant blue and white Chinese tea jar in the center. I thought using a few of them filled with peonies surrounding the center jar would be beautiful alongside the silver footed bowls from Pottery Barn for the pansies. Then, I opted for the highly versatile chargers and salad plates from the Frances Palmer Pearl Collection.

It’s impressive that you started your own company at age 18. How do you handle it all? I actually just turned 20 on the night of this event! I try to surround myself with people I can trust and whom I consider to be great role models. And the fact that I’m young and ambitious doesn’t hurt!
