SPA DREAMS TRANSFORM THIS SPACE INTO A TRANQUIL OASIS

Christopher Pagliaro turned the homeowner’s desire for a Zen-like bathroom into an Asian-inspired reality. A new home allowed the flexibility to accommodate any design imaginable—from dropping floors to increasing structural strength and water capacity. With these adjustments, Pagliaro formed his big idea for this private retreat: creating an indoor waterfall by combining the bathtub and shower into one, open wet area.

The challenge? Most bathtubs are designed to prevent the very overflow Pagliaro desired. The solution? A heated double-infinity concrete bathtub. Pagliaro built a surrounding overflow trough with loose Bali pebbles, designed for water to fill, then spill, onto the shower floor.

A two-tiered seat in the tub invites bathers to sit or recline, while taking in the panoramic view of Long Island Sound. Running water from the shower and tub seems to flow into the peaceful waters outdoors—the key feature in creating a soothing, meditative ambience.

With a modern approach, Pagliaro used materials that summon time-honored traditions. “Zen spas are visually soft, serene and timeless,” he says. “Teak wood, concrete and river stones achieved the organic experience of an Asian bath.” Concrete was integrated throughout the space, from the custom window casings that discreetly house the plumbing to the vanity sink encased in custom teak. Bali pebbles landed a recurring role, appearing in the walls and floor in keeping with the Asian-influenced motif.
