The Tiny Town of Roxbury Is Full of Celebrity Connections

Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell is selling her Roxbury farmhouse. For a town of 2,300 people, Roxbury has an oversized cultural footprint. Residents past and present start with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Miller, who signed their marriage license at the town clerk’s office—she being better known as Marilyn Monroe. Author Frank McCourt lived here (and is a permanent resident as he’s buried in the Roxbury graveyard), as did Walter Matthau and Alexander Calder. A current member of the Roxbury culture club is rocker Debbie Harry, better known as Blondie, who recently purchased a circa-1795 white-clapboard Colonial. And a soon-to-be-ex-member is writer Candace Bushnell, the one-time Glastonbury girl who penned Sex and the City, among other popular novels. Bushnell’s place is billed as a mini estate—small in size (at just under 1,500 square feet) but big on charm, much like Carrie Bradshaw herself, come to think of it. The circa-1890 Victorian farmhouse has a cozy, cottage-y feel with wide-board floors, tin-ceilinged kitchen and multiple fireplaces. The three-acre property also offers a pool and an A-frame pool house that has a kitchen, bathroom and sleeping alcove. It lists for $1,365,000 with Maria Taylor and Carolyn Klemm of Klemm Real Estate.
