2012 Judges
ANTHONY BARATTA
Interior Designer
Anthony Baratta LLC
Anthony Baratta began his design career over 30 years ago after graduating from Fordham University with a degree in Art History. Combining his talents with William Diamond, their firm, Diamond Baratta Design, created a design language, which is a balance between pattern, color, history, luxury and ultimately what is modern. In 2003, the firm’s work was celebrated in the Cooper-Hewitt Museum’s National Design Triennial: Inside Design Now. Last year, William and Anthony awarded Benjamin Moore’s coveted “Hue Award” for lifetime achievement in design. Additionally, Diamond Baratta has created multiple collections for both Lee Jofa Fabrics and Stark Carpet. Anthony is especially proud of his two books with William, Diamond Baratta Design and All American. Upon William’s retirement, Anthony now carries on the work of the firm with his new company Anthony Baratta, LLC and looks forward to many more years of creating unique and inspiring interiors.
Stephen Elrod
Executive Vice President, Creative Director
Lee Jofa and Brunschwig & Fils
For Lee Jofa Executive Vice President and Creative Director Stephen Elrod, the sensual luxuries of fabric form the backbone of a 30-year career in interior design. In disciplines from showroom planning to furniture development, Elrod has remained devoted to the art, craft, and eminent fashion of fine textiles, bringing to his adopted field a couturier’s instinct for color and pattern, technique and technology, classicism and innovation. As Lee Jofa enters its third century, Elrod is helping to guide the venerable fabric house into a leading role as a decorative resource for a new generation of designers and clients. His work includes frequent travel to Europe to source design, color, and fiber trends and developing significant licensing partnerships with notable interior designers including David Easton, Kelly Wearstler, Suzanne Rheinstein, and Thomas O’Brien.
Adam Hopfner
Building Project Director
Yale School of Architecture
Returning IDA judge, Adam is the founder of Hopfner Studio, a design-build practice based in New Haven. His recent projects have included a mixed-use music-recording studio, painting studio, and office space as well as various residential commissions. Prior to founding Hopfner Studio, he worked on award-winning projects as a project manager at Gray Organschi Architecture.
Frances Palmer
Ceramic Artist
Frances Palmer Pottery
Returning IDA judge, Frances Palmer has been making ceramics since 1987. Frances was trained as an art historian, yet has always made work with her hands. First as a printmaker and now as a potter and gardener, she loves the process of changing ideas into form. Her handmade ceramics are functional art – dishware or vases that can be used on a daily basis. Each piece, no matter how large or small, is considered and individual. In addition to her handmade pottery, Frances is proud to collaborate with Niagara Ceramics in Buffalo, New York, to produce the Frances Palmer Pearl Collection™. This tableware, hand cast and glazed in a factory setting, is the most durable dinnerware on the market today and goes from oven to table. She is the only artist to have partnered with this great American factory dating from 1901.
Ashley Stark
Creative Director
Stark Carpet
Ashley Stark, Creative Director of Stark Carpet, is the third generation of this revered company. She bridges the gap between classical and trendy by revolutionizing family heirlooms and auction pieces. Ashley wants the company to be a mix of keeping with the heritage and of looking to the future to ensure its ongoing success. Today Stark Carpet is a mecca of inspiration to designers offering custom designed carpet, fabric, furniture, paint and wall covering for both the residential and contract markets.
Ashley grew up being not just design-conscious, but something of a design consumer, which definitely explains the confidence she has in her tastes. Ashley loves being able to dig through the archives seeing patterns that were implemented when her grandparents started the company, yet are so relevant today. Today, her father, John Stark, and her uncle, Steven Stark, now head the company.
She is proud to take that timeless tradition and inject it with a little youth-driving energy. Her goal is to take Stark Carpet into the future with a leading edge that shows a true understanding and awareness for the incredible past and legacy from past generations.
