Tour a Bright Kitchen Designed with Entertaining In Mind

The kitchen in this new 10,200-square-foot home by Austin Patterson Disston Architects (partner-in-charge McKee Patterson and project architect Gabriella Albini) was designed with family and entertaining in mind. “Our clients requested a kitchen that allows them to have a busy yet warm family life including an ample island with hidden appliances and counter seating where the family can gather,” says Albini. “They love to cook, and they entertain very frequently.”

The mix of materials used includes dark wenge wood, white Calacatta Gold marble countertops, a custom stainless steel hood with inverted seam detailing, white cabinets and gray Belgian Java granite flooring. “The wenge wood gives warmth and contrast to the white cabinets,” says Albini. “Since the design reflects classical Scandinavian Baroque elements, we wished to present an Old World kitchen feel, including an entire tiled ice-box wall and low cabinets that appear to be a harvest table under the large windows overlooking Long Island Sound. All the built-ins were designed as individual furniture pieces, as is often found in historic homes.”

A unique wall of cabinets with butcher-latch hardware reads like those in a large and elegant commercial kitchen and hides a walk-in refrigerator and a walk-in pantry, plus two freezers behind one of the commercial doors. This arrangement allows the homeowners to store and easily access food, beverages and dry goods, while presenting an uncluttered, welcoming kitchen. And the homeowners’ favorite part? “I believe it’s the island, where they have great conversations while having fun cooking,” says Albini. “And, of course, everyone loves the walk-in cooler.”

A wall of cabinetry, which hides storage and refrigeration, wears butcher-latch hardware from Kason Industries; wall tile is through Greenwich Tile & Marble; walk-in cooler is through Nor-Lake.
